At the back of La Petite Maison there’s always been a rather scruffy lean to, which over the years, had become a dumping ground for old beams, broken rotovators, bales of straw and was rather overgrown with brambles and elder.

Every third weekend in September, Angouleme hosts the Circuit des Remparts, the historic street race which was first run in 1939 around the ramparts of the old city. From Friday through to Sunday evening the city is teeming with people and historic and classic cars, many of which (the cars) will be racing on the Sunday. Other cars are brought along by enthusiasts to be admired in the Champ de Mars, and many of those will have taken part in the rally on the Saturday. Here is a selection of photos taken on the rallies 2006 – 2009, around Angoulême, and from various race days.
When we bought this place, we wanted something with a couple of gîtes, for two reasons really. We both have large families and it’s ideal for putting them up, along with friends. And also to see if we could attract some rental business. There is always a sense of anxiety when you have total strangers booked in for a holiday, not because they might turn out to be nutcases, but I am very conscious that this is their holiday, and I want everything to be perfect for them, including the weather!
In 2005 I bought my first classic car, a 1961 Jaguar MK2, at Barons auction at Kempton Park. I was bidding against a German guy who was there with his wife and two young boys. He was disappointed to lose out to me but I was determined to have that car.
It’s that time of year when things are starting to come to life outside, the daffodils have been out for a while, sounds are coming from the various potagers around the village, people are dusting off their rotovators and prepping the ground, ready for planting. The ground has been too solid from the cold to be working it, but for the last couple of weeks we have had glorious dry weather with temperatures up into the 20s, the soil has warmed up.
