Beaches and swimming

Swimming is a very popular activity in France and so there are many public swimming pools open during the summer months in the locality, as well as water parks (known as Plan d’eau) that offer many activities for the family in addition to just swimming. The beaches of the Atlantic coast are only 90 minutes drive away and provide  vast,  uncrowded sandy beaches for swimming, kite surfing and many other activities. Here are some of the best beaches and best local swimming pools and water parks:

Îl de Ré

Also known as the white island, the Îl de Ré is very popular with Parisienne holidaymakers during high summer and is its long sandy beaches and chalky cliffs and charming ports and harbours are accessed via the 3km long toll bridge that connects the island with the mainland at La Rochelle. La Côte d’Argent

La Côte d’Argent – the Silver Coast – stretches south from the Gironde estuary to Bayonne and is more or less one vast beach. The area is made up of shifting sand dunes, some of vast proportions backed by Landes Forest, an artificial forest planted in the 19th century to reclaim the area of marsh and sand inland and that now extends over two Départements.
