June brings a wealth of things to do in Poitou-Charentes catering for most interests, and being before the school holidays and French Grand Vacance, June is a wonderfully quiet period to enjoy the region.

Art and Music
An exhibition documenting the period when Picasso lived in the town from 1939-1940, marked also by the arrival of German troops. A selection of his works are on display.
Picasso arrived in Royan in September 1939, having left Spain after the trauma of the bombardment of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. He moved into the hôtel du Tigre with his new friend Dora Maar and in the course of the following year produced some celebrated works from his rented studio on the third floor of the villa The Sailboats at 46 Boulevard Thiers just above the harbour.

Museum of the Bande Dessinée
Huge collection of comic strip artwork with library and children’s workshops. At 121, rue de Bordeaux Anglouleme. Open every day from 10:00 to 19:00 (also closed Mondays).
Located on the Charente river in a converted former Cognac warehouse the Musée de la bande dessinée is the largest comic strip museum in Europe, with a collection of more than 8,000 original drawings and over 110,000 magazines and comic books by artists such as Hergé (TinTin), René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the two men behind Asterix, as well as Elzie Segar who created Popeye. Also included in the displays are works from Marvel Comics, Peanuts and an area devoted to Japan’s manga comics.
Festival Free Music
Friday 20 June and Saturday 21 June, this is the 14th edition of the festival with two concerts on Friday and Saturday featuring a number of groups including Dub Inc, Skip The Use, Yodelice and Le Prince Miaou.

Free organ concerts by the Collégiale Notre-Dame la Grande on every third Saturday of each month.

These, the French Championships are the third most important cycling event in France after the Tour and the Paris-Roubaix race, and haven’t been seen in the département since Châtellerault hosted them in 1993.
