Every third weekend in September, Angouleme hosts the Circuit des Remparts, the historic street race which was first run in 1939 around the ramparts of the old city. From Friday through to Sunday evening the city is teeming with people and historic and classic cars, many of which (the cars) will be racing on the Sunday. Other cars are brought along by enthusiasts to be admired in the Champ de Mars, and many of those will have taken part in the rally on the Saturday. Here is a selection of photos taken on the rallies 2006 – 2009, around Angoulême, and from various race days.
Here is just a selection of the many cars that took part in the rallies:
Sunday is race day:
People showcase their cars throughout the streets of the city:
I’m not really a petrol head, so if anyone can identify the cars shown here, please post a comment so I can update this post.
And finally, the icing on the cake for us:
This photo was taken of us on the 2008 rally, and we were chuffed to bits to see that we were on the cover of the 2009 rally book!
Looking for accommodation for the Circuit des Remparts weekend? And perhaps the opportunity to drive a French classic on the rally – find out about hiring one of our classic cars when staying here.

I think what you have called a Bugatti is in fact an Alvis, but I’m no petrol head either, I just know it’s not a Bugatti
Hi Abi
Can I be boring and tell what most of cars are?
Starting below your DS23i you have:
RR PhantomII, circa 1934. Bentley SI, 1957, Sunbeam Alpine, 1955, Cisitalia, 1950. Below the paddock shot is a Riley the engine gives it away, under the XK Jag is another Riley.
I’m being told to stop being an anorack!
See you soon
Regards
Dick Francis
Hi Dick, that’s certainly not boring! That’s very helpful, and I will make sure all the photos are correctly tagged, thanks, Abi
